Today’s post is about a great online tool to learn and practice vocabulary: Quizlet.
It is a wonderful free little programm. You register once and can use it for all the words you want to learn and practice:
- You can compile vocabulary lists of your own.
- You can use the vocabulary lists of others (there are a lot of lists on all kinds of thematic fields, on certain texts or other online teaching resources)
- Your teacher can make lists fitting the texts or videos you do in your lessons.
Once you have chosen the list you want to practice on, you can even select and mark certain words or expressions you want to concentrate on and skip the others.
You have several ways to learn vocabulary and practice (they are called MODI):
-
Flashcards:
You can choose in which language you want the word to appear first.
If you want, you can have it pronounced and even determine the speed of speech for that!
-
Learn:
The word appears first in the language you are learning, is pronounced and you need to type it in your mother tongue.
[You could also choose to have it shown at first in your mother tongue, but I recommend to start with the language you are learning, if you want to do the different Modi in this order: 1. Flashcars, 2. Learn, 3. Speller.]
-
Speller:
The word is pronounced in the language you are learning, but shown in your mother tongue and you need to type it in the language you are learning.
There are three more Modi called “Test”, “Scatter” und “Gravity”, which are little games:
-
Test:
multiple choice questions regarding the learned vocabulary
-
Scatter:
You see the words or phrases in both your mother tongue and the learning language and have to match the fitting ones (like a memory game, only all cards can be seen at the same time).
-
Gravity:
Save planet Earth from asteroids! The asteroids are the words/phrases in the learning language and they are flying towards Earth. The only way to stop them hitting Earth is to know the word in your mother tongue and type it in the gap. If you are right, the asteroid stops…..and the next one comes! There are several speed levels to choose from.
My advice: For the most fun, just practice with the Modi you like best!
This program is a lot of fun to learn vocabulary and you will know your words and expressions at the end!
Last, but not least (There is even more to Quizlet):
-
You can print out your vocabulary lists in both languages, either in an alphabetical order or the way they appear in a text/have been entered into Quizlet.
-
You can even print flashcards to learn vocabulary offline!
It is completely free for language learners!
(Teachers can choose between a free basic and a paid premium account.)
Have fun and success practicing!
And please share you experience and comments!
